	What is Postfix and how do I use it? 01.07.2010 As a main supplier of all fencing supplies, we get many customers asking what the best way to fix their fencing or gate posts into the ground is. The more experienced DIY'er who knows the correct quantities and methods, may not mind getting their hands dirty and mixing their own concrete using ballast and cement but for many people, the Postfix option is by far the best one available because it takes away the need for any specialist knowledge, can be used by anyone able to lift a 20-25kg bag and is mess-free. Postfix is quite simply a ready-to-use mixture conatining all the necessary quantities and types of products to make a perfect post fixing concrete. All you need to do is pour the dry mixture into the post hole, add some water and watch as it sets to a permamant concrete within 10-15 minutes! What are the Benefits? The main two benefits of using Postfix are: It saves you a huge amount of time beacuse there is no mixing required or waiting for hours for it to set so you can move onto fixing the next post after just 10-15 minutes.. It saves you from a big mess of concrete to clear up at the end of the day because you simply pour the Postfix into the hole and add a little water to activate the setting so you can sit back and relax once the post(s) have been installed. How much will I need? The amount you require will depend on how big the post and hole are but as a general rule, we advise to plan to use 1.5 bags per post. How much is it? 	What Topsoil is right for you? 21.06.2010 Here at Earlswood Garden & Landscape Centre, we stock no less than five different types of Topsoil to cater for all of your requirements. Each type of soil is suited to different tasks around your garden from filling large holes to finishing off the perfect lawn. We have compiled a small list of the most common uses for your information. The five Topsoils we stock and their most common uses are: UNSCREENED SOIL (AS DUG) This, as the name suggests, is soil that has been dug directly from the ground and has not passed through any form of processing or filtering. It's generally a very good soil but may well contain debris and even weeds so is not suitable as a finish layer. USES: Unscreened soil is best used to fill in any holes you may have, such as old ponds or trenches that are to be covered over with plants or turf. SCREENED TOPSOIL This soil again, as the name suggests, has been put through a process of screening, where the soil is loaded onto a giant sieve with 20mm holes to allow the soil to pass through but nothing larger so all bricks and other large debris is removed. There may still be small parts of debris and stones in the soil but the condition is generally very good. USES: Screened topsoil is good for a variety of uses and is seen as a budget alternative to the most specialist Topsport & Mutli-Pupose Topsoils. It can be used as a soil to lay turf onto or as a filler for raised beds but we would recommend to put a top layer of suitable compost or a higher grade soil to give best results. MULTI-PURPOSE TOPSOIL This topsoil is completely manufactured by our supplier and comes with no debris at all. It is blended with green waste, bark finings & loam to provide a very rich nutritional topsoil. USES: Multi-Purpose Soil is best used in all areas of planting, from beds and borders to pots and containers. TOPGROW TOPSOIL Topgrow Topsoil is a blend of 100% peat-free well composted, finely graded organic residues together with slow release fertiliser from organic sources. It is officially listed as a compost but due to it's make-up, is also suitable to be used as a growing topsoil. USES: Topgrow Topsoil is mainly used as a tree and shrub planting compost to aid the successful establishment of newly planted trees and shrubs. We also recommend topgrow for areas of planting, with the exception of where you may have lime-hating plants such as Rhododendrons. TOPSPORT TOPSOIL Topsport Topsoil is another manufactured topsoil and comes with no debris at all. It's a fine, light blend of soil, silt & loam and is almost sand-like in appearance. USES: Topsport Topsoil is highly recommended for any area where you are laying turf or seeding a lawn. It's design is specifically targeted towards the requirements of turf and provides excellent drainage along with a balanced level of nutrition. Because of it's make-up, Topsport Topsoil is also very easy to work with and is favoured by our extensive list of trade customers. Quantities Stocked We stock all of the above topsoils in bulk bags of 0.5cu.m, where each bag will cover approximately 10sq.m at a depth of 50mm (2") and also keep a stock of top soil in 20ltr bags for those smaller projects or just to top up a small area. If you require a large volume of topsoil, we can also arrange for direct tipped loads of over 20cu.m and can deliver to all areas including Birmingham, Solihull, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Warwickshire, West Midlands and beyond! 	What's in a name? 13.06.2010 Some of you may have noticed that we have recently started using the trading name of "Earlswood Garden & Landscape Centre" in place of our registered company name, "Earlswood Nurseries Ltd". This is not due to any other reason than trying to explain what kind of business we are to customers who may not yet had the pleasure of visiting our centre, as quickly and easily as possible. We are a 50% Garden Centre and 50% Landscaping Centre situated in Earlswood so we thought the most logical name to call ourselves was Earlswood Garden & Landscape Centre. Most people are now familiar with the term Garden Centre and know what to expect once you enter the gates and we're no exception to this but we have recently discovered that not everyone fully understands what a true Landscaping Centre is, so here's a brief description. A Landscaping Centre is a place where you will find every non-living product you need for your garden (or driveway) that does not need planting and includes items such as Fencing, Patio Paving Slabs, Block Paving, Walling, Decorative Gravels & Chippings, Decking, Timber, Sheds & Garden Structures, Cement, Sands, Ballast, MOT Hardcore and much more. 	Rain is great! 09.06.2010 Many keen gardeners love to see rain at this time of year as it not only helps with the watering but can also make some of the jobs around your garden a lot easier and we are expecting to have some long spells of sunshine this summer so we should make the most out of this short spell of rain. One excellent example is laying turf. New turf needs to have plenty of water at regular intervals for the first couple of weeks and then ongoing maintenance throughout the year if you want to keep it looking it's best all year round. 	Size is everything 30.05.2010 When it comes to buying decking or any other timber product, size really can be everything. Various retailers will advertise their unbeatable prices on such products but when you take a closer look, you may notice you are not actually getting a product which matches our high standards, which may cost you more time and money in the long run. As an example, decking is a hot product for 2010 and there are promotions being spread displaying a very low cost per 1m length of decking. Sounds good at first but when we took a closer look, we found the width and thickness of the boards were in fact a lot smaller than our own, which means not only will you need more lengths to cover the area but they will be thinner too so there is more chance of them flexing under weight. After many successful fencing & gate installations using the Postcrete fast-setting concrete, we have now sourced a new supply for a near identical product, which will be available at 20% less! Ready-mixed Postfix, which you simply mix with water in the hole and leave for 10 minutes to set may cost a little bit more than the traditional mix of ballast and cement but you gain a huge saving in time and there's no messy mixing or clearing up to do after the installation.
